About our Scholarship

The Scholarship Committee was established in 1959 and officially known as the Verdean Veterans Memorial Educational Aid Committee. Its Chairman was Manuel Lopes and the Executive Secretary was John Britto. The first scholarships were awarded in 1960 and totaled $275. The name was changed in 1973 and the mission was revived in 2004 with the formation of the Cape Verdean Recognition Scholarship Committee.

The Cape Verdean Recognition Scholarship is awarded to graduates of selected high schools in the region. Scholarships are awarded on the basis of several factors of consideration including academic achievement, extra-curricular and community service activities, and school recommendations, to name a few. The first scholarships awarded by the Cape Verdean Recognition Scholarship in 2005 were presented to 15 scholars for a total of $6,600. Over the years since then, the Committee has awarded more than $600,000 dollars in scholarships. This year, under the leadership of Co-Chairs Myles Dias and Bruce A. Rose, the Committee expects to award $80,000, a record amount for the third consecutive year!
